Courage in the Face of Fear

Early yesterday morning a woman was hit by a semi. OFD rescuers responded to the scene as usual . After being on scene for just a few minutes, the scene went from an accident to an active crime scene. Apparently the woman "could have" been dragged into the road in by a person someone in the vacinity; fear entered the atmosphere. As the Police raced around with guns drawn, OFD was released from the scene.
S.W.A.T. was called in to sweep a home nearby; nothing was found. The woman's death is suspicious and still under investigation.
As I explained this situation to my wife, I didn't expect the reaction I got from her; she was scared. In the last month, two nearby gas stations were robbed at gunpoint. Earlier this year my home was invaded during broad daylight. A few months later cars in my parking lot were looted. These crimes, although they don't happen often, have sent a wave of fear through my home...and my wife.
As Firefighters, Police Officers, EMTs, and Soldiers, sometimes the situations we are placed in call us to "brave the fear." You don't have to be an emergency responder to get a good dose of fear on a regular basis--for you, take what you learn here as an example of how to battle fear head-on.
Bravery is a Biblical trait. Although for us fear never subsides, somehow we are able to find courage in the face of it. Think about what it takes for an Army Soldier to salute their fallen friends and carry on the fight; it takes true courage. Even men and women, who are without the strength of Christ, are able to find courage; however, sometimes fear can the best of us.
Everything in the world tells us to be afraid: the media, our families, friends, and our natural reactions to dangerous things. To be brave in the face of fear takes faith. I hope you place your faith in the power and strength of The Ultimate Commander.
Listen to what God told Joshua when he was called to lead the Israelites into the promised land and be encouraged! "Haven't I commanded you: be strong and courageous? Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go." (Joshua 1:9)
My faith is in the Ultimate Chief; where's yours?
